The Covid-19 pandemic has changed how people in New Zealand work, shop and spend. While the economy is recovering, more people are working from home and spending in the biggest city, Auckland, has remained down. Tourists outnumber locals in the city, but spending is still 9.5% below pre-pandemic levels. The pandemic has also led to an increase in online shopping, which has seen a jump of 62%. Experts say that the pandemic acted as an accelerator and showed what was possible from a working and spending perspective. Even with restrictions lowered and borders opened, Covid still lingers throughout the economy.
