A pair of strong earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.9 and 5.3 hit near Pōrangahau in the lower North Island. More than 20,000 people reported feeling the quakes on GeoNet’s website. The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed there was no tsunami risk. Ongoing aftershocks have continued since the initial two, with the largest being a magnitude 4.3. Despite being the strongest felt in Pōrangahau, residents felt that the earthquakes were not as strong as those in Christchurch but took action nonetheless.
