New Zealand’s Finance Minister Grant Robertson announced that the next budget will contain $4bn in savings and reprioritisations over the next four years, with the money mainly going to agencies’ existing cost pressures. Savings had been found across a wide range of areas, with programmes like the public media merger being stopped, and social leasing schemes curtailed. Robertson said the government was well placed to handle the new expenses due to Cyclone Gabrielle recovery, as public debt was significantly lower than many other countries. The budget would also focus on supporting New Zealanders through the cost of living and recovering from the cyclone.
