Starting from tomorrow, the price of adult and child passports in New Zealand will rise due to the effects of Covid-19 and the expenses associated with running the service. The cost of an adult passport will increase from $199 to $206, while a child passport will go up from $115 to $120, including GST. This is the second of three planned yearly increases in passport fees, aimed at recovering the full costs of the service following the significant drop in demand and revenue during 2020 and 2021 caused by the pandemic. The decision to extend the validity period of passports from five to ten years in 2015 also contributed to the need for increased prices, as the costs must be recovered from a smaller number of passports. The adjustments are necessary to sustain the passport service, which experienced a sharp decline in applications in recent years but has seen an increase in demand in 2022. Another price increase is planned for next year.
