Retailers in Auckland’s CBD are still facing a significant amount of crime despite a 220% increase in police foot patrols. One barber shared an incident where his friend was attacked for no reason and had to be hospitalized. Another retailer mentioned an incident of theft from their storeroom. The deputy mayor described the state of crime in Auckland as “absolutely awful.” Police have set up a base in the city center and have increased foot patrols, but there is still an increase in offending, primarily related to alcohol and mental health. Retailers want more police presence, but the police emphasize the need for reporting incidents and remind everyone that safety is a collective responsibility.
