The Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security has approved the revision of fines for foreigners who overstay their visas. The new recommendations propose no penalty for departure within 7 days of the visa expiration, a penalty of $250 for overstaying between 8 and 14 days, and a penalty of $500 for overstaying more than 14 days. This decision was made to support tourism and attract investors, as well as to address the inconvenience faced by foreign mission officials in Sri Lanka. The approval of these revisions will require parliamentary approval in the future.
