Stats NZ plans to release the initial data from the 2023 Census in May 2024. The Census had a response rate estimated between 89% and 91% of the population, meeting the target set by Statistics Minister Deborah Russell. The data will undergo processing and analysis over the coming months before being released. The first data release will include population and dwelling counts at national and regional levels, as well as counts of people of Mฤori descent. The success of the Census is attributed to its flexibility and adaptability to low response rates. Work is already underway to design a more sustainable and resilient model for future censuses. The previous census in 2018 faced challenges with low response rates and an undercount of certain population groups.
