Food prices in New Zealand have surged to their highest levels in 36 years, with vegetable costs being the main driver behind the increase. Prices rose 1.6% in June, marking the largest monthly rise since the beginning of the year. Fruit and vegetable prices specifically rose 8.1% for the month, or 2% after seasonal adjustment. The rise in prices was mainly attributed to items like tomatoes, capsicums, and lettuce. Annual food inflation reached 12.5%, matching the highest rate since 1987. Factors such as bad weather affecting kลซmara and potatoes, as well as higher prices for eggs and dairy products, contributed to the increase in grocery prices. Restaurant meals, meat, poultry, fish, and non-alcoholic beverages also experienced price hikes.
