Counterfeit currency is becoming a growing problem in New Zealand, with a surge in fake notes reported this year. Between January and April, there were 80 recorded occurrences of counterfeiting, and authorities fear this number may surpass last year’s total of 146 cases. The North Island, especially areas like Hamilton and Auckland, has been hit the hardest. The Dairy Association and hospitality businesses have been targeted, causing concern for small businesses already recovering from the impact of Covid-19. In response, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand has launched a campaign to raise awareness and equip retailers and hospitality workers with skills to identify counterfeit banknotes. They urge businesses to stay vigilant and take necessary steps to prevent accepting fake notes.
