Wellington City Council is introducing a new traffic monitoring network equipped with AI-powered VivaCity sensors to track various modes of transport and gather data on traffic flow, cyclists, pedestrians, and road usage. This 24/7 monitoring system will provide real-time insights into how people move throughout the city and utilize cycling lanes, enabling the council to make more accurate assessments of traffic patterns and the impact of transport network changes. The continuous data collection will also help measure the effects of seasonal variations and major events on urban infrastructure. This initiative aligns with Wellington’s existing focus on improving walking and cycling infrastructure.
