A couple in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, discovered a bag containing $70,592.60 on the side of the road, which they promptly turned in, earning them accolades from the police.
The honest pair stumbled upon the cash after picking up their child from daycare and noticed the bag was electronically locked, indicating it belonged to a bank, according to the police.
Inspector Chris Wallace commended the couple’s actions, describing them as a “true test of honesty.” He quoted the great British writer C.S. Lewis, stating that “integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” In this case, the couple demonstrated exceptional integrity.
The remarkable act of returning such a substantial amount of money surprised even seasoned police officers, with one noting that, in his 40 years based in Hastings, he had never encountered a similar story.
Following the discovery, the bank and a security company were alerted, and the cash bag was promptly returned to its intended destination. The police praised the couple for their honesty, emphasizing that their actions set a remarkable example of integrity.
