MetService has issued warnings of a significant weather event set to sweep across New Zealand, bringing a sudden change in temperature, strong winds, and heavy rain. While warm temperatures are currently experienced in various regions, a cold front is expected to make its way from the South Island to the North Island by Friday. Christchurch and Ashburton, for instance, will see a notable drop from 27ยฐC to 12ยฐC. The North Island will also experience cooler conditions, transitioning from a “tropical feel” to fresher air. Strong and blustery southerly winds are anticipated, leading to a Strong Wind Watch for certain areas. Residents are advised to take precautions, secure loose items, and exercise caution on the roads, especially in exposed areas. The weather system will also bring rainfall, with a Heavy Rain Watch issued for Hawke’s Bay and Tairฤwhiti/Gisborne. The frontal system is expected to move away by Sunday, bringing temporary relief before the arrival of the next low-pressure system in the following week.
