In a ceremony held at Government House in Wellington, Christopher Luxon was officially sworn in as New Zealand’s 42nd prime minister. Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro conducted the appointment on behalf of the King, with Luxon taking the oath of allegiance on the Bible.
The swearing-in ceremony extended to other key figures, including coalition partners ACT leader David Seymour, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, Finance Minister Nicola Willis, and Attorney-General Judith Collins. Shane Jones of NZ First opted to recite his oath in te reo Mฤori, aligning with Tama Potaka from National, while Melissa Lee from National spoke in both English and Korean.
Following the appointments, Dame Cindy conveyed her well wishes to Luxon, acknowledging the considerable responsibility that comes with the role. Luxon expressed gratitude, emphasizing the strength and unity of the executive council. He urged his colleagues to remain focused on their initial commitment to public service.
Speaking to the media afterward, Luxon outlined his top priorities, emphasizing the need to address the economic challenges outlined during the election. Tackling the underlying causes of inflation was a key aspect of his plan. Additionally, Luxon highlighted the importance of restoring law and order.
ACT’s Seymour, now a minister, acknowledged the weight of responsibility and the significant tasks ahead, describing the job as substantial.
With all the new government ministers sworn in, the focus now shifts to implementing changes and priorities outlined by the leadership.
