A new email scam impersonating the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is circulating, falsely claiming recipients are eligible for the Cost of Living Payment. While the email may appear authentic with the IRD’s logo and layout, the scam exploits the public’s lack of information, as the last Cost of Living Payment was distributed in October of the previous year. The IRD advises recipients to verify emails by checking for personalization with their name or myIR username, emphasizing they do not include attachments, working links, or email addresses in official correspondence. Those receiving suspicious emails are urged to forward them to phishing@ird.govt.nz and can seek confirmation by calling IRD at 0800 700 334.
