A regular family evening turned into a nightmare for the Kannangara family in Howick, Auckland. Muditha Kannangara, along with his wife Dinushika and their two daughters, aged 2 and 6, had recently settled into their new home and were eagerly anticipating a weekend trip to Rotorua. However, their plans were devastatingly disrupted early on Saturday morning.

Around 6:30 am, Muditha was startled awake by a noise outside. He was horrified to find his car being stolen from his driveway. In a frantic effort to save the family vehicle and preserve their holiday plans, Muditha rushed to confront the thief. This led to a tragic turn of events where he was run over and severely injured. The car thief abandoned the vehicle after the incident, leaving Muditha in critical condition. He was immediately taken to Middlemore Hospital and has since undergone two surgeries, with his recovery still uncertain.

This incident has left the family, particularly Dinushika, in a state of fear and vulnerability, feeling unsafe even in their own home. The community’s concern for their safety and well-being has been immense.

Krishan Gallage, the founder of SLNZ Helpline, has been in close contact with the family, offering support and coordinating community assistance. He emphasizes the importance of community solidarity in such times and urges the public not to take matters into their own hands in dangerous situations, but rather to trust the authorities.

In response to this tragedy, a fundraising initiative has been organized to support Muditha’s family during this difficult period. Donations can be made to the Mudi Recovery Fund, account number 02-0506-0250437-009. This effort demonstrates the community’s commitment to standing with the Kannangara family as they navigate this challenging time.

The swift action of the NZ Police and the dedicated care provided by St Johns Ambulance and hospital staff have been crucial in addressing the immediate aftermath of this incident.

This story underscores the unpredictability of life and the power of community support in the face of adversity.
