A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 struck 20km west of Pōrangahau in the lower North Island early this morning. The quake, which occurred at a depth of 10km, happened at 3.18am and was followed by several aftershocks, including a magnitude 4 tremor at 3.30am. Over 5000 people reported feeling the quake on the GeoNet website. Central Hawke’s Bay’s deputy mayor, Kelly Annand, described it as a “big quake,” reminding people of the earth’s movements after a period without quakes. GeoNet recorded five aftershocks by 3.40am and advised people to practice earthquake safety measures. Fortunately, Fire and Emergency reported no callouts or damage related to the earthquake, despite it being strongly felt in the region.
