New Zealand is at high risk of a significant measles outbreak this year, warns public health expert Professor Michael Baker. With increasing global cases and low local vaccination rates, particularly among Mฤori children, experts fear serious consequences. The last outbreak saw over 2000 cases and hospitalizations, mainly of young children. Achieving herd immunity requires about 95% vaccination coverage, but currently, only 83% of two-year-olds in New Zealand are fully vaccinated. Efforts are underway to increase vaccination rates, especially among young adults who missed vaccinations due to past system issues. Health authorities have prepared response plans for potential outbreaks.
