A new study by researchers from the University of Auckland has found traces of methamphetamine, nicotine, caffeine and THC in the air of Auckland’s Central Business District. The study is the first of its kind in Oceania and used filters at a pollution monitoring site on Customs Street. While airborne drug concentrations spiked during the week leading up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the researchers assure that the airborne drugs pose no active threat. The researchers hope that the study can eventually be used alongside wastewater analyses to understand the presence of illicit substances in communities.
