The Central Environment Authority states that the main event of World Environment Day is scheduled to be held today in the Petakotowa area of Colombo and several programs have been organized under this.

Introduction: On June 5th, World Environment Day will focus on finding solutions to the urgent problem of plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution. With over 400 million tonnes of plastic produced annually, half of which is used only once, the planet is facing a grave threat. Less than 10% of plastic is recycled, leading to an estimated 19-23 million tonnes ending up in our water bodies. Plastic pollution not only clogs landfills and oceans but also poses health risks as microplastics find their way into our food, water, and air. However, there is hope in the form of scientific solutions and growing efforts to tackle this crisis.

The Theme and Host Country: World Environment Day 2023, hosted by Cรดte d’Ivoire in partnership with the Netherlands, will showcase how countries, businesses, and individuals are striving for more sustainable use of plastic. Cรดte d’Ivoire has demonstrated leadership in combating plastic pollution by banning plastic bags and promoting reusable packaging. The country’s largest city, Abidjan, has also become a hub for environmentally conscious start-ups. The Netherlands, as a signatory of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, is committed to reducing single-use plastic and embracing durable and sustainable alternatives.

Mobilizing Action: The urgent need for action from governments, companies, and individuals to address plastic pollution cannot be understated. World Environment Day 2023 aims to generate public and political pressure to scale up and accelerate efforts in solving this crisis. By showcasing success stories and promoting sustainable practices, the day encourages widespread participation and collective action to make plastic pollution a thing of the past.

World Environment Day 2023 calls for a global movement to #BeatPlasticPollution, highlighting the dire consequences of plastic pollution and the pressing need for effective solutions. With the support of governments, businesses, and individuals, we can make a significant impact in tackling this environmental challenge. Let us join forces on June 5th and beyond to protect our planet by reducing plastic waste, promoting recycling, and embracing sustainable alternatives. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world for future generations.
