The government will provide funding for 50 additional medical school places to address doctor shortages and train more homegrown doctors. The University of Auckland’s medical faculty is thrilled about the opportunity to allow more students to study medicine and contribute to the country. The distribution of these extra students between Auckland and the University of Otago is yet to be determined. Health Minister Ayesha Verrall encouraged medical students to consider general practice, emphasizing that there are plenty of job opportunities available. The New Zealand Medical Students Association and the university support the funding, highlighting the importance of locally trained doctors who understand the country’s cultures.
