The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) has officially announced the arrival of El Niño in New Zealand. This weather pattern typically brings dry conditions to the east and increased rainfall to the west. Over the summer, the country can expect dramatic temperature fluctuations, including unseasonable warmth followed by cold southerly winds. These temperature swings are described as a “rollercoaster.” The North and East of the North Island may experience below-normal rainfall, while the West of the South Island is likely to see above-normal rainfall. Stronger than usual winds are anticipated, leading to dry spells in the north and east of both islands. NIWA also warns of a higher fire risk in some areas.
