Summary: Twitter, now officially known as X, will test a new annual subscription fee of $1.43 for users signing up from New Zealand and the Philippines. This move follows owner Elon Musk’s suggestion that fees would be introduced for platform usage. New users who opt out of the subscription will have limited functionality, such as being able to read posts, watch videos, and follow accounts but will not be able to post tweets, reply to tweets, like tweets, retweet, or bookmark posts. The test is designed to reduce spam, manipulation, and bot activity, with a focus on platform accessibility rather than profit generation.
Starting today, we're testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription to be able to post & interact with other posts. Within this test, existing users are not affected.
