Medsafe, New Zealand’s medical regulatory body, has granted approval for an “updated” Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine to combat emerging strains of the virus. Aimed at addressing the XBB 1.5 strain, the updated vaccine is expected to be available to the public by winter 2024. The decision comes amid a new wave of coronavirus cases, with a focus on reducing the burden on hospitals during the upcoming winter season. Pharmac is actively working to secure a supply of the updated vaccines, and any changes to eligibility will be considered after public consultations. In the meantime, the current Covid-19 BA.4.5 booster vaccines remain available, and the public is encouraged to get a booster to enhance protection.
