Golriz Ghahraman, a Green Party MP, has resigned from her position effective immediately following allegations of shoplifting. The claims involve incidents at two different stores on three occasions. Ghahraman, who has not been charged, expressed deep regret and acknowledged letting down many people. The Green Party co-leaders, James Shaw and Marama Davidson, supported her decision to resign, citing Ghahraman’s extreme distress. The party aims to maintain high standards of public behavior, and the co-leaders expressed sadness at her departure. Ghahraman cited the impact on her mental health due to work-related stress and stated she would focus on recovery and positive change. The police investigation is ongoing.

Golriz Ghahraman is a New Zealand politician who, until recently, was a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Green Party. Born on November 4, 1981, in Mashhad, Iran, she is an Iranian-Kiwi human rights lawyer and politician. Ghahraman migrated to New Zealand with her family as a child, and she later became a naturalized citizen.

Before entering politics, Ghahraman worked as a human rights lawyer and advocate, specializing in criminal defense, immigration, public international law, and constitutional law. She gained prominence for her work at the United Nations in Cambodia and Rwanda.

Ghahraman entered New Zealand politics and was elected as a Green Party MP in the 2017 general election and became the first refugee elected to New Zealand’s Parliament. In Parliament, she served as the spokesperson for human rights, justice, defense, and disarmament. Ghahraman has been an advocate for various social and environmental issues, with a particular focus on human rights and foreign policy.

However, her political career faced controversy when allegations of shoplifting surfaced. This led to her resignation from Parliament.
