Between 2019 and 2023, New Zealanders found themselves spending more on essential items due to the cost of living crisis. Weekly spending on food increased by 28.1% to $300, and on housing and utilities by 15.5% to $398. Transport costs rose to $252 per week. There was also more spending on health, personal care, and savings. Overall, weekly household expenditure was $1598. Meanwhile, spending on communication and recreational activities decreased, as more people focused on essential expenses and savings.
