As the cooler autumn season settles in, New Zealanders are gearing up to turn back their clocks this weekend as daylight saving time comes to an end. At 3 am on Sunday, April 7, clocks will need to be set back by an hour, giving everyone an extra hour of sleep.

The concept of daylight saving time can be traced back to George Hudson, a post office employee and insect enthusiast, who proposed the idea in 1895 to create longer evenings for outdoor activities like bug hunting. Despite initial resistance, his idea eventually gained traction, leading to the introduction of daylight saving time in New Zealand in 1927, 32 years after his initial proposal.

While New Zealanders enjoy their extra hour of sleep this weekend, they can thank George Hudson for his innovative idea that has become a regular part of life for many around the world. So don’t forget to reset your clocks, check your smoke alarm batteries, and savor that additional hour of rest.
