A young farmer company in Sri Lanka has established the country’s first export-oriented potato chip processing factory in the Kahattewela area of Bandarawela. The factory was built with the Small-scale Agribusiness Participation Program at a cost of Rs. 20 million and with the financial contribution of the Kahatthewela Young Farmers Company. The lack of electricity has prevented the factory from starting production, but it will help 180 farmer families who grow potatoes to sell their harvest to the factory. Currently, Sri Lanka imports potato chips, but there is an 11 percent increase in demand for them, including from countries like the Maldives, Canada, the UK, Luxembourg, and South Korea.
