Ed Sheeran has been cleared of copyright infringement after a US jury decided that his 2014 hit, “Thinking Out Loud,” did not unlawfully copy Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic, “Let’s Get It On.” The jury determined that the heirs of Ed Townsend, the songwriter behind Gaye’s song, had not proven that Sheeran, his label Warner Music Group, and his music publisher Sony Music Publishing had infringed on their copyright. Townsend’s heirs had sued Sheeran for copyright infringement in 2017, claiming that “Thinking Out Loud” copied the “heart” of Gaye’s song, including its melody, harmony, and rhythm.
