New Zealand’s health workers doubt that the government’s new plan to prevent hospitals and clinics from being overloaded this winter will make much of a difference. Health Minister Ayesha Verrall has outlined 24 steps to reduce overcrowding and help prevent doctors and nurses from becoming burnt out. However, those working in emergency departments around the country say that while the plan’s ideas are good, they will take time to implement and will not address the issue of bed block in overcrowded hospitals. The government’s plan includes measures to expand telehealth services and increase the use of GP clinics and pharmacists.
