New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week is a time to celebrate Deaf culture and NZSL in New Zealand. Organized by Deaf Aotearoa, the week is full of classes and resources encouraging people to learn NZSL and learn more about deaf culture in New Zealand. NZSL is recognized as an official language of New Zealand by the New Zealand Sign Language Act 2006 and can be legally used in government and legal proceedings. With its own grammar, linguistic differences, and culture associated with it, NZSL is a language of its own, influenced by British Sign Language. NZSL Week is celebrated annually in May, and everyone is encouraged to join in to celebrate the rich language and culture of NZSL.
