Airlines have expressed concern over the potential cost increase for passengers as Auckland Airport undergoes a $3.9 billion redevelopment. The charges for airlines are expected to rise over the next five years, with domestic charges increasing by 130% and international charges reaching $46 per passenger by 2027. Air New Zealand and Qantas have called for clearer communication and a full plan regarding the total cost of the remodeling. Auckland Airport CEO, Carrie Hurihanganui, emphasized the importance of the infrastructure upgrade and stated that delaying it would not make it cheaper. She also mentioned that Auckland Airport’s charges are relatively low compared to other airports and that the airlines have the flexibility to adjust airfares accordingly.
