Weather warnings are in effect for several areas of New Zealand as powerful winds, with gusts reaching 150km/h to 200km/h in exposed regions, have caused extensive damage in Canterbury. The severe weather is attributed to an active trough moving eastward across the country. The warnings cover a wide range of regions in the South Island and southern North Island, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to persist on Sunday. In addition, road snowfall warnings are expected on several routes in the affected areas. The severe weather caused power outages affecting thousands of households, and some election polling stations had to close due to the adverse conditions.
