Fonterra, New Zealand’s largest dairy cooperative, remains the country’s leading greenhouse gas emitter for the third consecutive year, followed by the three largest petrol retailers: Z Energy, Mobil, and BP. The top ten emitters, including meat companies, gas field operators, and steel and dairy producers, contributed a combined 43.4 million tonnes of emissions in the year ending June 2023. While these figures provide a partial picture of company impacts, they allow for comparisons between those that voluntarily disclose their emissions data and those that do not. Notably, methane and nitrous oxide emissions from dairy and meat production, carbon dioxide from petrol and diesel vehicles, and heavy industry emissions dominated the list.
