According to the police, there were 388 incidents of ram-raids resulting in 218 prosecutions during the six-month period ending in May. Police investigations are ongoing for 99 of these ram-raids, and 86 referrals have been made to police youth services. Since December 2022, there have been 14,215 prosecutions and 1,429 youth referrals for retail crime. Assistant Commissioner Iwi and Communities Chris De Wattignar highlighted the youth-focused approach in the justice system, aiming to hold young offenders accountable while diverting them away from the criminal system. The collaboration between police and Oranga Tamariki helps address the immediate needs of the youth and their families, ensuring a coordinated action plan within 48 hours. The Retail Crime Prevention Programme and security interventions have also played a role in preventing offenses and capturing offenders.
