Strong winds with gusts exceeding 120 km/h swept across Otago and Canterbury, leading to the cancellation of 93 flights by Air New Zealand. This disruption affected approximately 12,000 passengers, and it is expected to take a day or two to clear the backlog. The airline is working to reposition aircraft and crew to accommodate affected travelers, with many passengers being re-accommodated on other flights. However, some may face delays in finding suitable alternative flights. Additionally, Cook Strait ferry crossings were canceled due to heavy seas and strong southerly winds. While power was restored to most homes after outages in Canterbury and Otago, some areas still experienced electrical issues. Fire and Emergency received numerous weather-related calls, including reports of fallen trees and property damage.
