Recent incidents of counterfeit money have raised alarms in Waikato and Auckland, prompting warnings and vigilance from authorities. In Waikato, several retailers, and Cafes, have fallen victim to fake banknotes, totaling hundreds of dollars. Retailers are urged to be cautious, especially during the Christmas rush, as police report seven incidents of counterfeit notes, including $50, $20, and $10 denominations. Signs of fake money include differences in texture, color, and size compared to genuine notes. The second incident involves a cannabis cultivation site in Auckland, where tens of thousands in fake cash were discovered along with a firearm and ammunition. Police advise the public to stay alert and report any encounters with counterfeit money.

Safety Tips:

  1. Check Every Note: Examine all banknotes for security features, including rolling color bows, ferns, watermarks, and glowing denomination patches under UV light.
  2. Download Guides: The Reserve Bank of New Zealand offers guides on their website to help businesses and individuals identify security features and recognize counterfeit notes.
