New Zealandโ€™s Climate Change Commission has recommended urgent action on the role of forests in reducing greenhouse gases. The Commission says that policies that only focus on sequestration in forests above gross emission reductions need to be addressed. The recommendations are part of the country’s efforts to cut emissions and reduce the impacts of climate change.
The Climate Change Commission also suggested a number of other measures, such as retrofitting buildings, preparing farms for low-emission technologies, and improving public transport.
The Commission has also called on the government to introduce a specific target for reducing total emissions, or gross emissions, in the second and third budget to ensure the country is on track for achieving its 2050 targets.
