A group of veterinarians is calling for clear labeling on eggs to show whether they are produced by colony hens living in cages. Since a ban on battery cages came into force in New Zealand, some egg producers have been “blurring messages” for consumers, says Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Aotearoa. While the living conditions for hens are better in colony cages, hens still cannot express their normal behaviours, said the managing director of VAWA. It is understandable that consumers are confused since egg cartons are often labelled as “colony laid” or “fresh colony eggs” which avoid using the word “cage”.
