Tourism earnings in Sri Lanka have exceeded $690 million in the first four months of 2023. This reflects an 18% increase over the same period in 2022. The Minister of Tourism, Harin Fernando, has said that the rebound in the tourism industry is significant for the economic recovery of the country. Although performance is still down 50% compared to the benchmark year of 2018, the rise in Chinese travellers is expected to benefit the industry in terms of arrival numbers and tourism earnings, as well as the overall economic growth. The country lost over $10 billion in foreign exchange earnings due to the pandemic during the past two years.
