Over the past five years, almost 10,000 New Zealanders have made injury claims related to cellphone usage. According to ACC, the injuries include loss of balance or control, injuries to the face, dental injuries, and eye injuries. Neck and lower back injuries were also common. ACC injury prevention lead James Whittaker emphasized that the actual number of injuries could be higher since the data relies on people reporting cellphone usage during their accidents. Whittaker advised people to avoid multitasking and focus on one task at a time to prevent these injuries. He expressed the hope that the number of phone-related injuries does not increase and emphasized that most injuries are avoidable with proper foresight.
