The QS World University Rankings for 2024 has been released, featuring 1,500 institutions from 104 locations. It is the only ranking that emphasizes employability and sustainability. This year, the ranking has introduced three new metrics: Sustainability, Employment Outcomes, and International Research Network. The results are based on the analysis of 17.5 million academic papers and input from over 240,000 academic faculty and employers. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains in the top position for the twelfth consecutive year, followed by the University of Cambridge in second place, and the University of Oxford climbing one position to third place.

All eight universities in New Zealand have seen an improvement in this international university rankings. The University of Auckland made a significant jump from 87th to 68th place in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings. The University of Otago followed at 206th place, with Massey University at 239th and Victoria University at 241st. Other New Zealand universities in the rankings included the University of Waikato, Canterbury, Lincoln, and AUT. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped the list, with the University of Cambridge in second place. The rankings were based on various factors, including reputation, staff-to-student ratio, and research citations. The University of Auckland received recognition for its sustainability efforts and ranked ninth in this category. The vice-chancellor of the University of Auckland emphasized that a high-ranking university benefits not only the institution but also the country’s international reputation and workforce quality. The achievement is notable considering the financial challenges faced by universities due to underfunding from the government.
