Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has revealed his plans to transform the city’s port with an exciting vision that includes a seaside amphitheater, exhibition center, and saltwater pool. The ambitious plan covers a 2km stretch of land currently owned by Ports of Auckland and could begin within two years. The mayor aims to create a vibrant downtown environment with improved waterfront access to impress visitors and enhance the city’s appeal. While the cost and full impact on port operations are yet to be determined, the mayor believes it’s time to release unused land from the port and focus on revitalizing the waterfront. Ports of Auckland CEO supports a staged approach, but the Maritime Union representing port workers is skeptical about removing usable land from the port. Aucklanders will have a say in the proposals before implementation.
