Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has announced a phased mega-plan to construct a second harbour crossing in Auckland along with transportation upgrades for the North Shore. Estimated to cost between $35-45 billion, the plan aims to address congestion and improve connectivity across the city. The project includes the construction of two new three-lane road tunnels under the Waitematฤ Harbour, additional lanes for public transport, walking, and cycling, and an extended Northern Busway.

The plan also proposes a new 21km light rail tunnel between Wynyard Quarter and Albany. The phased approach will prioritize funding to secure the required land and allow for careful and responsible cost management. Transport Minister David Parker emphasized the importance of creating certainty in Auckland’s transport planning.
