According to the Rabobank-KiwiHarvest Food Waste survey, New Zealand households are wasting less food, with a reduction from 13.4% to 12.2% of food being thrown away compared to last year. However, the rising cost of food has increased the overall value of discarded food from $3.1 billion to $3.2 billion annually. On average, each household throws out $1,510 worth of food each year. The primary reasons for food waste remain “food going off before you can finish it” (50%) and “use by and best before dates” (32%), with cost (74%) and feelings of guilt about others going without (35%) being major concerns. Vegetables (38%), bread (29%), and fruit (25%) are the most commonly discarded foods. Improvements in understanding food labels and a willingness to eat food past best-before dates contributed to the reduction in food waste.
