Te Pāti Māori, New Zealand’s Māori Party, orchestrated a “nationwide action day” on the day of the Commission Opening of Parliament. Characterizing it as an “activation” rather than a protest, the party aimed to voice concerns over plans to end co-governance. Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi emphasized that this action marked the beginning of a movement for “an Aotearoa Hou” (New Zealand with hope and a future). The timing on Parliament’s opening day symbolized a commitment to a new path. Critics, including Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and ACT Party leader David Seymour, deemed the protests disruptive and questioned their democratic respect.
