In a stunning display of skill and prowess, Pathum Nissanka redefined excellence in One-Day International (ODI) cricket by becoming the first Sri Lankan to score a double century in an ODI match. This historic feat was achieved during the first ODI between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan at the scenic Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.

Surpassing the previous Sri Lankan record of 189 runs set by the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya in 2000, Nissanka showcased fast-paced batting that left spectators and opponents alike in awe. With an unbeatable score of 210 runs from just 139 balls, including 8 sixes and 20 fours, Nissanka’s performance was nothing short of spectacular.

This incredible innings propelled Sri Lanka to a mammoth total of 381 runs for the loss of just 3 wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Despite a valiant effort from the Afghanistan team, which managed to score 339 runs, Sri Lanka clinched a 42-run victory, taking an early lead in the three-match series.

The match was a high-scoring affair, with both teams together amassing a record total of 720 runs, marking it as one of the most exhilarating matches played at Pallekele. Nissanka’s historic double century not only etched his name in the record books but also set a new benchmark for batting excellence in Sri Lanka and the world of cricket.
