Greenpeace Aotearoa has unveiled an interactive map, “Know Your Nitrate,” allowing people to check nitrate levels in their drinking water. This map is part of Greenpeace’s initiative(Greenpeace is an independent, global environmental campaigning organisation.) to inform the public about potential health risks due to nitrate contamination. Otago University scientists estimate that around 800,000 New Zealanders are at risk of consuming hazardous levels of nitrates. The data used for the map is derived from Greenpeace’s two-year free nitrate testing, primarily focused on self-supply bore users in rural areas. Nitrate contamination is an emerging public health concern, with potential links to colorectal cancer and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
